Stand on the Danube side and look up at the dome. It is ninety-six metres high, and that number is not an accident: it points to eight ninety-six, the year the Hungarians arrived in the Carpathian Basin. The dome of St Stephen's Basilica is exactly the same height, and for a long time it was a rule that nothing in Budapest should be built taller. The building was designed by Imre Steindl, and the work ran from eighteen eighty-five to nineteen oh four. The style is neo-Gothic, which means a medieval language of forms used in a country where no such building had ever stood. That was a deliberate choice: the Hungary of the day wanted to belong among the parliaments of Western Europe, and wanted the building itself to say so. Look at the facade facing the river. It is two hundred and sixty-eight metres long, and almost every window is different. That is not decoration: inside there are close to seven hundred separate rooms.

NagyvásárcsarnokThe Great Market Hall

A csarnok, amelybe hajóval érkezett az áruThe hall the goods arrived at by boat

Walk in through the main gate and look up. What is above your head is not a stone vault but a steel frame, and that is the point: in eighteen ninety-seven, when the hall opened, this was the modern building material. It was designed by Samu Pecz, and the roof is covered in Zsolnay tiles, so from outside it is an ornate building in a Hungarian idiom, while inside it is a raw industrial structure. The hall was not built as a market in today's sense, but as a machine for feeding a city. On the Danube side a canal ran into the basement, and goods arrived by boat, straight into the cellar. Fresh food reached the centre of town without being hauled through the narrow streets. The building was badly damaged in the Second World War, and was only fully restored in nineteen ninety-four. The ground floor is still what it always was: meat, vegetables, pickles.

GellérthegyGellért Hill

Erőd, amelyet nem ellenség ellen építettekA fortress not built against an enemy

Stand at the railing and look across the city. From here, two hundred and thirty-five metres up, you see in one view what used to be two separate towns: Buda on the hillside, Pest on the plain. The hill is named after Bishop Gellért, who became bishop of Csanád in ten twenty-four, and who by tradition was thrown from here during a pagan revolt in ten forty-six. The fortress behind you, the Citadella, was finished in eighteen fifty-four, and it was not built against an invading enemy. The Habsburg command put it up after the defeat of the eighteen forty-eight revolution, and its guns faced the city. A fortress that holds its own population in check. The Liberty Statue on top dates from nineteen forty-seven, the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, and it has outlived several political systems since, with changing inscriptions.

Puskás ArénaPuskás Aréna

Az új stadion, amely megőrizte a régitThe new stadium that kept the old one

Walk around the stadium on the outside and look for the old sloping concrete ramps. They do not belong to the new building: they are what remains of the Népstadion, which opened on this site in nineteen fifty-three and was built largely by volunteer labour. When the new arena was designed, the ramps were not demolished but left standing, as a memorial. The Puskás Aréna opened in November two thousand and nineteen, it holds sixty-seven thousand two hundred and fifteen spectators, and it is named after Ferenc Puskás, captain of the Hungarian side of the nineteen fifties, the Golden Team. In November nineteen fifty-three that team beat England six to three in London, the first home defeat England had ever suffered against a continental side. This stadium is built on the story that began beside those old ramps.

MargitszigetMargaret Island

Egy sziget, amely kolostorként kezdteAn island that began as a convent

Set off along the long axis of the island and walk its length. It is two and a half kilometres long and barely five hundred metres wide, and today it is a park, though that is not how it started. It takes its name from Saint Margaret of Hungary, daughter of King Béla the Fourth, who placed her in a Dominican convent here when she was ten, and who stayed there for the rest of her life, in the thirteenth century. The ruins of that convent still stand in the middle of the island, and a few steps away are the remains of a Premonstratensian chapel. The water tower was built in nineteen eleven, in reinforced concrete, to the design of Szilárd Zielinski, the pioneer of concrete building in Hungary. It is fifty-seven metres high, and you can climb it. The musical fountain at the southern end dates from nineteen thirty-six, and was modelled on a fountain in Transylvania. Three stops, along one walk.
